Evans, a supporter of Mr Gladstone ■ has been elected in Southampton in place of Admiral Sir John Connell, who had resigned, Mr Evans polled 5140 votes, and Mr Guest, the Conservative candidate 4266. In the cricket match against Lancashire the Australian eleven in their first innings scored 163 runs; Jones 57 being the highest scorer. In their second innings the Lancashire team have lost two wickets for 47.

The Marquis of Salisbury is greatly incensed at the publication of a report of an interview he had with the Chinese Ambassador in London on the Chinese difficulty in Australia, and Sir Henry Halliday, the English Secretary to the Chinese Legation, and who acted as interpreter at the interview, lias been ordered to retire from that position May 25.
