Auckla.no, May 1. ‘ The Bank of New.'Soiith Wales has declared its usual dividend of 15 per cent and bonus of L2 Pis’ per cent equal 171 per cent per annum and carried LIO,OOO to reserve, which amount to L!)I0,000. A private letter received from London states that s.s. Triumph has been sold there for LIBOO.
Tho s.s. Wairrarapa which left for Sydney took away 187 passengers from Auckland, including 119 steerage. 25 passengers from the South were also on board.
It is stated that an English syndicate has sent out to iiu Auckland firm of solicitors a sum of LSOOO to purchase the ground and plant of tho Conquering Hero Mine, at Coromandel. Tho return of infectious diseases reported to the Sanitary Inspector for the month just closed, shows a considerable falling off as compared with previous months. Ponsonby District heads the list. The total number of cases : typhoid 8, scarlet fever 5, dipthoria 2. Wellington, May 1. The expected departure list of nominated Government passengers to leave England by the Tongariro on tho 7th April was received by the Immigration Department from the Agent-General in Loudon by last mail. The numbers are : For Aueklaud, 31 ; Hawke’s Bay, 11 ; Taranaki, 8; Wellington, 33; Nelson, 9; Marlborough, 1 ; Canterbury, 22; Westland, 16 ; Otago, 39 ; Southland, 3. —Total. 173.
Government are not likely to take any action ro Chinese by steamer Afghan beyond imposing poll-tax. After the expiry of present licenses to dig and search for gum on state lands, the Government will not renew them as it is thought that in tho past a large amount of damage to Kauri forosts has been occasioned through the carelessness of gum seekers.
The annual report of tho Wellington Public Hall Co., by which the Theatre Royal is o rraod, recommends that owing to the limited r eceipts last year no dividend be declared.
Dunedin, May 2. The Directors of the National Insurance Co. have declared an interim dividend of ton per cent per annum for the half year, ended 31st March. Invercargill, May 2. Mr IT. Feldwick, M.H,R. for Invercargill, addressed a small meeting of his constituents to-night. He received a vote of thanks and confidence.
