MARLBOROUGH RACING CLUB.

SUMMER MEETING.

SECOND DAY.

The meeting yesterday was again favored with magnificent weather. As usual, however, on second days, the attendance was not quite up to that of tho preceding one, and, to a regretablo circumstance refeired to further on, tho sport was not so good. As on the previous day, the Hibernian Band was in attendance, and played a pleasing selection of music. The fraternity were there in strong force, and even the three-card trick was tried, but notwithstanding tho aid of “ child-like and bland ” confederates, the thing did not seem to succeed amongst tho “ simple ” frequenters of tho course. The lynx eye of tho members of the force were upon them, and they felt indignant that they could not ply their legitimate trade. Refreshments, liqu’d and solid, were there in abundance, the latter being supplied by Mr G. F. Corbett in excellent style. Tho ladies, in strong force and fashionable attire, adorned the grandstand and the numerous conveyances that decked tho centre of the course. The programme was carried out promptly, and the greatest harmony prevailed on the course. Of the different events, thoro is little to comment upon. In tho

Hurdle Race Orient quito came up to tho expectations of his backers, although Kangaroo looked dangerous at one time. There were only _ two entries for the Ladies’ Plato Handicap, and on account of an objection being raised to the rider of Sweetie as not being a “gentleman rider,” Mr Redwood scratched Sweetie and his other horses for this and other events, thus causing a weakness in the remaining races. (Mr Redwood also complained that tho woight put upon Sweetie was altogether out of proportion to the merits of the horse, The Big Handicap was merely a duel be-, tween Silence and Tho Shah, and tho favorite had no trouble in putting tho event to its credit, Tho Soiling Hack Race was certainly tho most interesting event of the day, with eight entries, and as usual in such races, an outsidor won. Owing to threo horses being scratched tho Welter Handicap resolved itself into a contest between The Shah and Cupid, the former being the favorite, but Cupid maintained its lead from start to finish. Barosma and Johnny being scratched for the Consolation, left only the Shah aud Smooth in it, and the former had no trouble in placing the event to its credit. r fhg following is a detailed account of tho events ; Hurdle Jlandicae of 40 sovs, abqut 2j miles.
