EXCITING ENCOUNTER BETWEEN A PUGILIST AND A SHARK. Per Übetsic Telegraph Copyright. United Press Association Received Jan 23, 2 a.m. Sydney, Jan 22. Burke, the well-known pugilist, had a most peculiar experience in this harbor to-day. While out for rowing exercise his boat was attacked by a shark of immense size, and he at once pulled hard to endeavor to get away from it, but the voracious monster kept alongside the frail craft, and Burke kept struggling on until at last his boat opened out, aud he was thrown into the water. At this time he was about 150 yards from the shore, and he at once struck out for it. The shark attacked the boat, and commenced crunching it up. Burke reached the shore safely. It is thought that the boat, being of a light color, attracted the shark’s attention, while Burke, who wore a dark Jersey, managed to swim ashore. Several instances have occurred lately where oarsmen have been pursued by sharks. Perth, Jan 22. News received from Kimberley gives glowing accounts of rich finds there.
