Eastern Maori Electors’ Petition

Per Press Association. Gmsorne, Jan 18. The petition of Wi Pore to upset- Carroll’s election for the Eastern Maori District is now bjing heard before the Chief Justice and Justice Gillies. _ About a dozen witnesses have been examined to prove that Carroll paid for conveyance of electors to vote at Opotiki, also that he shouted both drink and food, and to prove that M‘Garvey, publican and storekeeper at Te Take, gave flour, sugar and drink to Maoris who voted for Carroll, and that ho did so by the sitting momber’s orders, lividenco was also taken that Carroll s father shouted at Manoa for Maoris on condition that they voted for his son. M'Gurvey in his evidence domes having acted as Carroll’s agent, but admits that ho charged for goods given to Maoris to Carroll’s account, which had not been paid. The jury expresses doubt as to the agency being proved. The ease will only partly he heard hero, the other charges in the petition will bo hoard at Napier.
