Per Press Association. Christchurch, Doc 27. John Rotlicry, aged 19 years, son of Henry Rothery, was drowned at Lake Ellesmere on Saturday. Wellington, Dec 27. Tho weather yesterday was fine for the holiday, but there was a strong wind blowing which interfered with harbor excursionists. The excursion to Picton was abandoned owing to the boisterous weather. The principal attraction in town was the Foresters’ sports, on the Basin Reserve, which were attended by about 6000 people. The principal event was that of a handicap of 4 c r stances, which was won by J. Scott. A number of excursionists left town this morning to attend the races at Palmerston, Masterton, and Lower Valley. As yet not a single accident is reported. Mriali James Williams, a farm laborer at Taitai, was this afternoon committed for trial, for criminal assault on a child of tender years. The specifications for tho permanent lighting of tne City by electricity arc now complete and copies will be forwarded _by tho outgoing San Francisco mail to Now York, Loudon and Paris, where tenders for the work xx 111 be invited.
