An Elopement.— Tho European Alail says ; —N.S.W. colonists will sympathise with Sir Daniel and Lady Cooper in their present trouble. Five years ago Florence Eva contracted a runaway marriage with Air Trevanion. As ip the ease of many elopements, -Gove’s young dream was not of long duration, and after squandering her fortune, being guilty of adultery and cast off by his father, this young scapegrace has just been sentenced by the Court to six weeks’ hard labor, without tho option of a tine, for two violent assaults on his wife, which Air George Lewis, the well-known solicitor, who conducted tho prosecution, described as part of a system of persecution and cruelty. The defence set up was that Mr Trevanion ir as greatly exasperated by finding his wife in a guest’s bedroom, but he did not insinuate that any indiscretion ] m d taken place. A suit is pending in the Divorce Court here for a dissolution of tho marriage, on tho ground of Afr Ire? van ion's oruolty and ncjultory) and, ruigc the assault caso was tried, feir James Hnnnen, on the application of Air Indorwick, Q.C., has given the custody of tlio three children of the marriage, who are of tender age, to Airs Trevanion, the understanding 5 being that they shall be kept at tho house of her father and mother.

ToiiACCjQ Gnowixn tn Great Brita.x.— There cannot'he any pretence (says a wellinformed correspondent) that the experiment of growing tohaceo in Great Biitain has not had a fair trial this year. The crop has hcon grown, or attempted to he °TOwn, as far north as Elgin, as far south as Cornwall, at Boston in the east, and at Cardiff in the west. Forty-five growers made the statutory declaration of Their intention to grow tobacco required by the Inland Iteveuuo Department, about twenty acres being the total area of the plots, as compared with five acres last year. The season has been far moic favorable to the maturing of the o_op than can be expected generally, so that if tobacco of good cpiality can be produced in this country, it should be forthcoming when the present growth has been cgion. Last year’s experiments cannot be said to have been brilliantly successful. According to the report of the Commissioners of Inland Revenue, tobacco was grown by '24 persons in foi| Teen counties, and attained maturity in 2U instances. In only six cases, however, was the produce good enough for duty to be paid on it, that of the other fourteen growers being destroyed. The aggregate produce of the successful growers was 232 lb-, on which the duty was charged, although it appears to have been paid m, oi ;v 8-1 lb, amounting to IT 4 when the ha lance-sheet tor >esf,-7 was made up. On the very liberal 1 VV “'bn *)!« tobacco is worth Is a ussum, ‘ pound in excess o. . to the six successful growers wm ... 12s altogether, or less than £2 each, probably not a tenth part of the expembture. At this rate agricultural depression will be greatly relieved by tobacco growing. No doubt allowance must be made fora first attempt; but by this time growers had had ample opportunities of learning their new business, and if there should be anything like a repititiou of last year's failure, the Revenue oflicials can scarcely be asked to undertake for a third time the great amount of extra work which the experiments have put upon them.

Holloway’s Pills. —Indigestion and Liver Complaints.—The digestion cannot be long or seriously disordered without the derangement being perceptible on tlio count3nance. These Pills prevent both unpleasant consequences ; they improve the appetite, and with the increase of desire for food, they augment the powers of digestion and assimilation in the stomach. Holloway’s Pills deal most satisfactorily with deranged or diseased conditions of the many organs engaged in extracting nourishment for our bodies from our various diets—as the liver, stomach and bowels, over all of which they exorcise the most salutary control. By resorting at; an early stage of this malady to those purifying and laxative Pille, ‘the dyspeptic is speedily restored to health and strength, and his sallowness gradually vanishes.

No More Hard Times.— If you wil 1 stop spending so much ou fine clothes, rich food and style, buy good, healthy food, cheaper and better clothing; get more real and substantial things of life every way, and especially stop the foolish habit of employing expensive quack doctors or using so much of the vile humbug medicine that does you only harm, but put your trust in that simple, pure remedy, Dr Soule’s American Hop Bitters ; that cures always at a trifling cost, and you will see good times and ha ve good health’ “ Chronicle.”
