HURRAH FOR “OLD GROWL.”
TO THE EDITOR S„t, —I, as a competitor, e n pleased to see such men as “Old Growl’’ : iteresting themselves in us young peds. As for the letter signed “ One of the Competitors ” which appeared in the 1 >ies on Saturday morning, it is one of *hc most remarkable subjects that has been seen "i your paper for some time, and plamly shows that the writer must havo had very Pttle experience in matters athletic. In tlie first place, ho states that “ Old Growl” is a disappointed one, fishing for something soft , but from appearances I should imagine “Competitor” to he the one who is doing aU the fishing. He next states that the finishes were close, which was not the case, as he and eveiyhody else knows, for with the exception of one or two events, yards and yards divided the runners when they readied the tape. “Old Growl's” comments were not unworthy of an athlete, but qu : te just and proper, after the hi unde ”8 made by the hand'eappers. “Competitor” liad better never don the tights.again (I doubt if ho ever has) if he wants 12 yards in a 100 yards’ race. I think it would he a much better thing for the Blenheim pods if they had such a man as “ Old Growl ” to handicap them than such a one. as ‘‘One of the Competitors ” in that olrice. As for “On the Scratch-’ he writes' jn a way that tells plainly he knows very little about foot races, for had he been on the scratch (I do not think lie has) ho wor'd not want to throw the yards away Dice a man scattering grain to birds, and h : s knowledge of handicapping would not be so vague. I have not the least doubt “Old Growl” has run in more events than “On the Scratch” has ever seen. Trusting I have not encroached too much on youi valuable space. —I am, kc. 1 ’ \OL.,f PhD
