At the Supreme Court to-day a man named Wood, convicted of forging and uttering, was sentenced to 12 months im« prisonmeot with hard labor. Too sentence had been deferred from last week to allow of information re Wood’s previous career being gained by the Probation officer, under the new Act. No previous conviction was proved,but His Honor considered his antecedents too doubtful to allow of the Act being applied, The compensitioi ca ,, ’ > Hammond v. the Minister of Public Works is being heard. Ths plaintiff claims copensatbn f t ,r land taken near Marton for purposes of the Central Railway. Nelson, Oct. 20.

The Supreme Court criminal sittings opened to-day before Judge Richmond, There are six crimi al. charges against four individuals and two civil oases. Henry White, of Westport, charged with larceny of jewellery is now being tried.
