PUTARURU A. AND P. SOCIETY

CARNIVALS FUNDS Diversion Opposed A 'meeting of the management committee of the Putaruru A: and P. Society was held in the W.D.F.U. 'rooms' *on ' Thursday, the president, Mr. A. R[ Vosper, presiding over a strong attendance. New Members Eighteen new members were proposed and elected, while four resignations were received with regret. Chopping Events Various correspondence was read relative to attempts to organise a choppong contest for the 1937 show. The society' applied for permission for this date (March 20) but this was refused as Mokai wanted it. The controlling authorities advised conferring with the Mokai club, but although there had been other atteriipts made nothing definite had been arranged. Mr. G. Benton reported that Mr. Cameron, a well-known champion axeman, understood that Mokai would be willing to co-operate. It was decided to arrange for a conference at an early date to try to obtain the co-operation of the Mokai centre for March 20. Use of Carnival Funds

Application for financial assistance from the carnival funds was received from the committee responsible for the annual outing of Salvation Army Home boys. The committee stated that it would not f be able to hold its usual. appeal for funds this year. y j Brigadier Fitness disapproved of the request on the grounds that the carnival funds were collected to assist a movement of permanent value for the district, and even although the campaign had been so successful he felt it was wrong to divert the" funds. He appreciated the great help of the ladies on the appealing; committee in the past, but felt that funds would be satisfactory this year, and also that to divert the carnival money as suggested would not be keeping faith with those responsible for its collection. •'' £ Mr. Vosper said all were in sympathy with the committee and woula da their best personally. ;

u Mr. G. V.; Pearce felt the society should not?.Cfeate; a precedent.' Any such; appeal, should- be a" personal onfe and subscription : lists should be opened in the town. On his motion it was decided to'refuse the request.

A similar; request" .from the HigK School staff-, .for ..assistance to the health stamp' campaign was dealt with in the same way. . 1 ' Donations to Prize List

Several donations to the show prize list were received. Mr. Vosper stated that the representative of a freezing company believed his firm would donate £lO in prize money, probably for fat lambs and fat bullocks. This had yet to be confirmed.

A prize of 10s 6d for the best-fed calf was received from Mrs. R. A. Bent, Puketurua.

A prize for children’s classes was promised by Miss Given. Mr. G. Benton reported that Mr, Cameron promised to donate a cup for chopping events if these were staged. Votes of thanks were passed to the donors.
