Brief Mention
The, Railways Department directs attention to an advertisement appearing in another column in connection with the running of express trains during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays. The spell of fine weather recently experienced the Matamata district has resulted in haymaking and shearing operations being pushed ahead with all possible speed. The hay crops are on the average very good and the dry weather has come at an opportune time to allow of cutting before the grass became too “ stalky.” A sly dig given by the president at the December meeting of the Matamata Farmers’ Union was greatly appreciated by members. The chief and final business of the meeting was a lengthy discussion on the shortage of labour on farms, and just before the meeting was closed a member reminded those present that it was customary to omit the January meeting. In agreeing Mr. F. C. Bush, who presided, remarked amid loud laughter, “ Yes, I suppose you will all be away at the beach.”
