The Matamata Record (Published Monday and Thursday) THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1936. PROGRESS AND SERVICE

MATAMATA shoppers will have a variety of service this Christmastide such as has never before been their lot. The recent handsome and commodious additions to the shopping area of the town are now occupied by tenants and the range of business which the town now possesses is comprehensive enough to satisfy the most exacting of custom ers. This progress is a compliment to both town and country sections of the community, for, without the solidity of the latter the former could not exist, and it is to the townspeople’s credit that they recognise the solidity of members of the farming community, and are ready and eager to meet their demands. The pretentious new blocks of shops which have been erected have drawn much favourable comment from settlers and visitors, and are certainly a credit not only' to those responsible for, their erection, but also the community as a whole. Service is the keynote and basis of all sound and successful business. Farmers know what it is to serve for the peculiar: conditions of their industry compel them to recognise this factor to a greater extent than others, as they have little say in the price their commodities will realise in the markets of the world. Only a few years ago they gave a remarkable response in this direction by nearly doubling their production when world prices were at bedrock. In the towns, too, true service is becoming more and more recognised as the essential factor in a business world in which competition becomes more and more keen every day. Trie old order is passing quickly, and today standardisation of both quality and price is being brought about in a manner which a couple of decades ago would have been thought impossible. In this direction again -Matamata has given a lead and to-day the town is recognised by the careful and shrewd buyer as being one of the' best shopping centres in the Waikato. That this marked step forward should be made is a healthy sign of the financial strength of residents as a whole; that it should be made at this period of the year is opportune and of big advantage to the Christmas shopper. Both sections should thus be well served.
