An examination was held on November 3 and 4, the standard required being a little harder than that for proficiency.

The successful Ngarua pupils were Robert James Scott, son of Mr. and." Mrs. W. Scott, who Stained 536 jnarks; or 12 more than the next boy,, and Megan Hayward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. Hayward, who

gained 509 marks, or 52 more than the neit girl; > . •>. • Both of the scholarship winners had intended continuing their education next year in any case, and it is stated that as a result of their success. the Matamata High School and an Auckland secondary school will each lose a prospective pupil. Their loss will be. New Plymouth’s gain. In conversation with a representative of this paper, Mr. S. 'C. Carter, headmaster of the Ngarua school, said this was the first time that Ngarua pupils had competed for these scholarships, so that the school’s success in “ winning the double ” was all the more noteworthy. ■ v ’ v ,* r < ‘ .
