EDUCATION BOARD GRANTS

1 FOE COUNTRY SCHOOLS Opportunity for Committees Replying to a motion of ; appreciation at; * the annual meeting of the Matamata Disti’ict Schools’ Associa*- 1 tion, Mr. G. Given (secretary) said that in his opinion the association had a great opportunity with the present Minister of Education. He felt it was an opportunity which school committees never reviously had, and he urged they go thoroughly into matters of staffing and accommodation with the utmost care and see that representations were made to the proper quarter. Mr. J. McKernan (Hinuera) endorsed these remarks and pointed out that the Hinuera school and schoolhouse were in such a state of disrepair that in the board’s own interest immediate action should be taken. He understood the Hinuera committee had been unable to get a satisfactory reply, and he hoped the association would take such matters up and prosecute them, with vigour. Mr. J. B. 'Nicholls . (Walton) said that Hinuera was evidently in 'the same osition as Walton was several years ago when the schoolhouse was almost uninhabitable. After plugging along for a long time the Walton committee had been able to get the work 1 . done bit by bit. At one stage the Education Board’s promise of the work being done “in due course ” meant two years, but in the ; end they got the work done. To-day the buildings were a credit to the district. When they first started there was not even a footpath or a bit of decent spouting on the house, i Mr. C. Quinlan (Te Poi) remarked that recently his committee had had little difficulty, and a favourable re- ■ ply to a request for work had been received within a week, or so. Discussion then dropped, the chair- : man, Mr. Gear, pointing out that the association would take up all such matters once it was found that individual committees could not make • headway.
