SATURDAY'S MATCHES

(By “Crossbar.”)

Notes and Comments

Patetere had the advantage in territorial play against Matamata, and‘it was only lack of finish and a shade of luck which prevented them from at least drawing with Matamata when these old rivals met on Saturday. The game was marked by keen but very clever spotting on both sides, and many promising movements were checked early by. players intuition on defence. Otto, a new-comer from Thames, shaped well fo** Patetere. Hg was \ cry enterprising and knew exactly what he intended to do each time he handled the ball. His only handicap appeared to be lack of physique Small, who moved up from fullback to Otto’s position at half when the latter went off injured, played energetically and is more suitably built for this* position. G. Brown did a lot of covering and played up to form, but D. Carlsori did not shine as much as usual. Machin’s speed will be lost among the forwards, in which position he used to finish off many movements. He showed his versatility by playing a good wing game.

Stewart and Strong made a Solid pair* Of .five-eighths, and the former must/have been very pleased with the manner in which his young partner fooled the home defence to score. It was. a very fine try. , •

Simpson proved to be right at the top of his form among the forwards and headed most of the rushes.

Inman played solidly, but was npt quite as fit as usual, while the two Fells displayed their usual speed and enterprise, especially in the loose. Weston also shone out, and Harwood and’ Tyrrell completed a solid pack. Matamata did not play as convincingly as on the previous week, and missed Bowden at half. JThe back line as a whole shows promise, howeyer. Carlson and Cole were the best, and Begbie was. again to the fore with solid all round play. The forwards should improve and while by no means as fast as Patetere off the mark beat them in concerted dribbles.

A UNIQUE REQUEST

Front Putaruru Union

’ What the chairman described as ■something unique in his experience .723 a request trom the Putaruru Rugby- Union that the 'Matamata, Rugby Union agree to some of t..e r’utaruru Union’s club games being played at Ti-rau. /

i The leitejr from 1 the Putaruru L; riion,; .asked the committee’s * permission to play pri -the Tiriau ground as owing, to .shortage- of grounds, its

clubs would otherwise have to travel 40 miles each week.Mr. E. W. Jordan said the Tirau Domain Board had asked him to inquire if it was in order for the board to let the Domain to the Putaruru Union. ... if •

Mr. J. H. Hawes suggested that a ruling be obtained from the Waikato Rugby Union. - *

Messrs. J. E. Barker and H. Ensor pointed out that Waikato might think Matamata was in favour of the proposal. They held it was the thin end of the wedge, and that the union delegate should be instructed to oppose the request if a ruling was sought.

Mr. Jordan said it appeared to him extraordinary that the Putaruru Union could not obtain another ground. Mr. Cummings agreed with this view.

Messrs. Hawes and Cotter then moved that the opinion of the Waikato Rugby Union be sought.

Mr. J. E. Barker moved an amendment that the committee regret that permission could riot be granted as it meant an outside union playing regularly within the territory of another union. ; : • - r r

This WaS seconded by Mr. D. Morrow. z / ; 7■ ■

Messrs. Hawes arid Cotter then withdrew their motion, and the amendment took its place and was carried > unanimously.
