CALF CLUB FORMED

FOR PUTARURU DISTRICT | Training' for Children A meeting of interested farmers and others was held last weeK to consider the formation ox a.calf club in the Putaruru district. The question had been brought up at the last meeting of the Putaruru Farmers’ Union, and ho definite steps had' been made towards that end, with the result that the independent meeting was convened. Those present were: Messrs. A. C. Anderson (chairman), E. M. Peffers, J. A. Ranger, H. L. Martin, J. Gawith, E. B. Smith, P. D. Morrison, E. D. White, H. H. Morrison. An apology for absence was received from Mr. J. J. Shine. Aims of Club Explained Mr. Peffers explained the aims of a calf club, stating that school children would rear a calf, which would be judged after a given period. He suggested three classes, for dairy type, best reared calf, and best- chart of progress. The system of judging adopted at Matamata was an awkward one, judging being taken on a basis of 60 points for dairy type and 40 points for condition. In Taranaki the former method suggested was in operation. The calves were judged in the different classes and the winners taken to a main centre for a final. Classification into different breeds gave no breed any advantage. The speaker moved the formation of the Putaruru District Calf Club, Mr. Gawith supporting the proposal, which was carried. The officers elected appeared in the last issue of the Press. One addition has since been made to the committee, Major Fitness being elected. Rules for Club The rules of the Matamata Calf Club were taken for a basis for the new club, but were thoroughly amended in accordance with the wishes of the committee. Points in the schedule are:—•
