WAHAROA CLUB
(By “ Ixion.”)
The Waharoa Club’s 27 mile race over the Te Poi course was held on Saturday under good conditions, only a light wind prevailing. The race was won by A. Sheat from scratch, and he also secured fastest time. J. Harcourt, of Hamilton, was the other scratch rider, making his first appearance after two seasons’ spell from road-racing. Sheat and Harcourt rode together in great style, catching the field about a mile from home. Coming into the home stretch Harcourt was in the lead with the others jockeying for positions. Sheat made his effort, however, at the right time and defeated Harcourt by several lengths, Harcourt being second and R. Tuck a length away third.
Sheat’s performance was brilliant, but Harcourt will improve a lot yet. M. Lewis and Tuck appeared to have the race in hand at one stage, but Lewis has not raced for a month, and his condition gave out in the home journey.
The time for the race was 1 hour 17 minutes 22 seconds, which is five minutes better than the previous time over the same course. Next Saturday’s race will be to Okofoire and return (27 miles).
