W.D.F.U.

PUTARURU BRANCH. The J.ily meeting of the Putaruru branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on Friday. Mrs. Duxfield presided over a largo attendance of members. Some business was dealt with in commit'ee before beginning the ordinal y meeting. In this way it is hoped to be able to make the afternoons more entertaining. It was stated that Mrs. C. Smith hoped to visit the branch at its September meeting to address the members. A pruning demonstration was postponed to the August meeting. The offer of the Putaruru library to give the division two dozen books was gratefully accepted. It was suggested that it be compulsory for the hostesses for the af‘. omoon to give only a plain afternoon tea. Discussion followed, and when it. was put to the vote it was decided to leave it entirely to the ladies’ own inclinations. Mrs. Voyce, who had just returned from the Dominion conference at "Wellington, gave a brief outline of the business carried out there. Mrs. Voyce said it was really hard work, for the conference started at 9 a.m., and with the exception of meal hours worked solidly till 9.30 p.m. Remits vrere dealt with for the reduction of rural telephone rates and the unfairness of hospital board levies to the country people.

TOKOROA BRANCH. The meeting of the W.D.F.U. at' Tokoroa last week was attended by a large number of women, five new members joining up and there were several visitors. The accounts for the annual dance were passed for payment. The dance showed a profit of over £5. The usual donation is to be sent to the community chest. After the business of the meeting, an amusing and entertaining competition was conducted by Mrs. E. ( Walker, resulting in a prize for Mrs Newell. ! The appeal for clothes for the needy brought in a large number of useful garments which are to be sent to the Putaruru society for distribution. A competition for “ the cheapest and best article made up for a clothes drive,"” was judged by Mesdames Burling and Jones, the win- j ner being Mrs. Wallace with Mrs. < Mossop second. At next meeting the competition will be for the bestj article from a, flour bag, while Mrs. Dewiss will give a demonstration on “ pine needle work.” Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Wallace, Walker and Ashworth.
