THIRD GRADE.

Cucksey Cup.

Matamata 6, Waipa 3.

In order to save the new surface on No. 1 ground this game was played on the far field at Bedford Park. Heavy driving rain fell throughout, and conditions were as bad as could be for the boys, who nevertheless revelled in the heavy going.

The visitors were the heavier side, but Matamata possessed the better backs. All of the points were scored in the first half, and towards the close of the second half Waipa made desperate efforts to snatch a victory. The defence held, however, and when time was called play was near halfway.

Matamata’s points were obtained by Strong (penalty goal) and McLean (try). Johnson scored a try for Waipa.

Two alterations were made in the home team, McCracken and Raethel replacing Ryan and Roberts. The former played in the pack and Raethel went to fullback, Hawke going up to Roberts’ place at five-eighths. In the second half Dobson replaced McCracken, who was injured, There was little between the teams, and the visitors were unlucky not to draw so far as the run of play went.

MATAMATA REPRESENTATIVES.

Marshall-Inman, Swap, Jack and Jim. Wilson, Solomon, W. Carroll, Settle, D. Carlson, G. Campbell, J. Carroll, McLeay, Howard.
