BEAUTIFYING MATAMATA.

IT is often remarked that a community can be judged by its environs, and without doubt there is much truth in the saying. So far as Matamata is concerned, viewed from this aspect, the community should pass fairly highly, for much has been done of recent years to beautify and otherwise clean-up the surroundings of the town. There is much work yet to be done, however, if the original plan laid down by the Beautifying Society is to be carried out. It is not expected that the full programme as originally laid down will be carried out in its entirety just now, as ceonomic conditions hardly warrant the expenditure involved. On the other hand there is much work that can be done at practically no cost to the ratepayers, provided there is co-operation between the Society and the Town Board. That this co-operation will be forthcoming there is little doubt, for already there are indications that the present board will meet in a generous spirit any concrete suggestions put forward by the Beautifying Society. This being so it would appear that there is a good opportunity for mutual effort in improving the entrances to the town on each of the main roads. This matter has been discussed at several early meetings

of the Beautifying Society, but on each occasion the matter has been deferred pending the completion of the scheme of planting trees in the main streets. As tins programme is almost completed, and as the plan for dealing with the entrances to the town was held up mainly because it entailed formation work, it would appear that the time is now ripe for the matter to be gone into thor-

oughly. \ J ' ' At little cost to either local body, such areas as the triangles near the southern and northern railway crossings, and lower Broadway, could be put into such a condition under the unemployment scheme that the Beautifying Society could carry out this portion of its programme. If this work was carried out in time for the coming planting season, it would enable the Beautifying Society to get ahead with its original programme, which programme would not only give pleasure to residents near the areas mentioned, but would also ensure pleasing entrances to the town which would compel the attention of all visitors to the district.
