THE “EXAMINATION” PARTY.
(By M. -Hamilton) ‘‘Mrs Enterprise at home, 8.30 p.m. to 11.30. Examination-papers.” So ran an invitation from a friend who is noted for the novelty of her parties. And, although I have never cared for examination papers, I accepted. It was amusing to be greeted with an examination paper, recalling those of school days; still more amusing to puzzle my brain for ingenious answers to its questions. First came some dozen questions, all asking for the names of cars repre sented by such things as a vegetable, a district of London, a swimmer, a county of England, and so on. The answers were, of course, the Bean, the Vauxhall, the Mercedes, the Essex and the rest. But lots of us couldn’t supply them! Then came vefy well-known quotations for which we had to supply the names of the authors who wrote them and the characters who spoke them. It was amusing, to hear Shakespeare mixed up with the Bible, Milton with Edgar Wallace, and so on. How few of us answered “Corinthians’ for “Evil communications corrupt g°° d manners.” Most of us said Hamlet was responsible! Some of us even failed to discover the name of the author of the famous slogan of the Great Strike: _ Not a penny off the wage; not a minute on the day,” though most of us knew, the occasion. If you want a good ice-breaker for a miscellaneous gathering at any time, I don’t forgot that an examination paper i makes a very admirable one. There is nothing like common ignOTance for making all men and women km!
