NUMBER PLATES.

£, REREGISTRATION OF CARS. . Motorists are advised that the new . motor registration plates to replace . those at present in use will require . to,.'#«ffitted to such vehicles by the end of next month. The new numerals will be white on a black background. At . the same time as they are applying for reregistration motorists must pay the premiums for third party, .insurance. In the case of private cars not used for business purposes the premium is 20s. A good . deal of unnecessary trouble was gone .to by applicants at the beginning of the present license period by defining private, cars under class 4 in stead of 5, the premium for the former . class being 30s. For motor cycles the f premium is 155.. Coloured registration plates were ..first, .adopted in the Dominion in 1921. Green and white were the col-. . ours for the 1925-26 period. Black . and white followed in 1926-27. In . 1927r28 orange and white held sway, . arid during the period just expiring blue and white plates have decorated 1 every motor vehicle. Old registration plates are not • wasted. They find their way back to ( Wellington in course of time from * . all parts of the Dominion. They are , io then cut up and the numerals are K used for numbering telegraph and ;: telephone poles all over the country. Formerly these poles had their numbers painted on them, but the enamel numbers from the old registration plhtes have been found to be much more lasting and efficient for the purpose. Licenses to drive motor vehicles will be issued by the various local • authorities in whose districts vehi- , cles are garaged during the period.
