metal for this road free provided the council would put it on. The distance was about one mile. The Clerk : You will be putting 1 in two plants? Mr. Guillard : Yes. The Engineer : The serious matter for the county is the royalty. The road was a six-ton road but occasionally the classification was reduced to 2£ tons. That, however, did not get away from extraordinary traffic, which might consist of oneton loads. Cr. Cox held that if the scheme came off it would be a great asset to the Tokoroa riding and they would get Government trucks up the line very quickly. Once the Putaruru end of the line was fixed it would be easy going from there on. There was not enough clearance on the Lichfield section of the line for Government trucks. The works committee, which had discussed the proposal, suggested that Mr. Guillard meet the coiinty officials and fully explain his pro-.. posals, so that a draft agreement, to be submitted to the next meeting of the council, could be prepared; also that application be made for authority to sell stone. The council adopted the works committee’s suggestion.
Reporting to the Matamata County Council at the March meeting the engineer stated that imperfectly shod vehicles had been in evidence lately, and that drastic action would need to be taken to protect the road surface. At Tokoroa a tractor with grip wheels had been damaging the pumice and rhyolite surfaces and a similar* vehicle had been on the bituminous surfaces near Matamata. Konaki’s and sledges were also, fairly common.
