SOCIAL AND MEETING. A Successful Year. A meeting to review the activities of the past year and to make plans for the new was held by the Matamata Chorus, Choir and Orchestra in St. Andrew’s Hall on Tuesday evening. The full attendance of members and the enthusiasm shown augur well for the success of the coming season. The efforts of the society during the past year met with success, as was illustrated when the accounts for the year were under review. Substantial aid was accorded deserving objects from the' proceeds of the year’s entertainments. Notably from the popular performance of “ Sherwood’s Queen ” the society was enabled to donate to the funds of the Beautifying Society the sum of £25 10s, and to the Earthquake Relief Fund £26 11s sd. From receipts of the December performances the Fire Brigade benefited to the extent of £7, and the Tirau Rest Room Committee was handed £6, the proceeds of the Tirau concert. All agreed that the year had been eminently successful, and it was decided to place on record the society’s appreciation of the zeal and industry of the conductor, Mr. H. E. Schofield, which had contributed so much to the success of the work. A committee of six members, Mesdames Wade, Misses R. Vosper, F. Duxfield, Messrs. Bates, Findlater and Mclsaac, and a secretary and treasurer, Mr. D. V. Saunders, was appointed to assume some of the duties which hitherto had devolved upon Mr. Schofield. “ The Gypsy Rover ” is 'to be the next production of the society, which, it is anticipated, will be staged in May'. Work upon the production is to commence almost immediately, and, with the talent available, a brilliant and successful entertainment is asThe keemiess of the society individually and collectively is most noteworthy,'and this, combined with the worthiness of the objects which they work to assist, should doubtlessly earn the support of the public which such a spirit merits. At the conclusion of the business of the meeting a most enjoyable social period was held, the items, in which most present joined, contributing towards a - varied and pleasant evening.
