THE “FAVOURITE.”
A novel form of street gambling was described at Marylebone Police Court. Alexander John (17), of Brecknock Road, Kentish Town, and Leonard North (16), of Torriano Avenue, Kentish Town, were charged with “ betting by way of wagering by means of an automatic sweet machine and bronze coins.” A constable said he saw six lads round the machine outside a shop in Torriano Avenue. They were wagering on the flavour of sweetmeats which the machine would discharge. Johnson said he would have “ twopence on the lemon,” arid North said he would have “twopence on the raspberry.” The winner took the sweetmeat, the stakes, and the pool (if one had accumulated owing to wrong flavour selections). * Johnson was fined 2s 6d. North was discharged under the Probation of‘ Offenders Act.
