SHIPS BEAT TRAINS.
4 AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS.
Competition of overseas ships with inter-State - trains will have to be taken into account by the Federal authorities when making their investigations shortly into the/ proposed suspension of the Navigation Act,
states the Sydney Morning Herald. Recent steaming performances of oversea vessels between the capitals have shown that if the embargo is lifted the faster ships will carry many passengers who now use the trains, because they have' to travel quickly. The Orient liner Orama recently steamed from Brisbane to Sydney in an hour and a quarter under the time taken by the express train. A passage of two and a half days from Adelaide was reported by ,the new Swedish motor ship Parrakoola, which reached Sydney recently. Al-. though handicapped to some extent by being in ballast, the Parrakoola averaged 16.33 knots for the 10,84 miles between the two capitals. The performance is said to be a record for a non-stop run as the fastest vessels that come into Australian waters have to call at Melbourne. .
