nightly meeting of the Matamata Town Board, held on Monday, there being present: Messrs. J. Buchanan (chairman), B. C. Taylor, A. Stewart, J. W. Taylor and J. Mclntyre. In attendance: The clerk (Mr. C. G. Lucas) and the foreman (Mr. A. Ogilvie). The Balance-sheet. The balance-sheet, a summary of which was recently published, was received back from the auditor, free from tags. The chairman and others thought the production very satisfactory. The W.E.A. The Workers’ Educational Association, Hamilton, forwarded an appeal for financial assistance to enable them to continue their work, the demand of which was increasing very rapidly.—Declined. Purchase of Seats. Mr. M. A. Metcalfe, Rangariri, advised that he would accept the board’s offer of 12s 6d per chair for 100 seats for the town hall.—Approved. The Silver Poplar. In reply to the board’s letter regarding the silver poplar, Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., stated that he would be pleased to place the board’s request on the third schedule of the Noxious Weeds Act, before the Hon. O. Hawken and to support the request.

The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised having received the board’s letter regarding the question of clearing silver poplar growth from section 8/10, block XI., Matamata, and noted that application had been made by the board to have that plant classed as a noxious weed. The writer regretted that the department had no funds available for the clearing of the section, but hoped that when the board’s application was finally dealt with that the 'board would advise the department so that the matter might receive further consideration.

The chairman said there were several people who had expressed their approval of the board’s attitude.

Heavy Traffic Fees.

The Hamilton Borough Council asked that the board should complete the necessary information with reference to the allocation of the heavy traffic fees.—Clerk forwarding information. Assessor Not Needed. The officer in charge of the Valuation Department, Auckland, Mr. W. Lovell, stated that an assessor would not be required for the year 1928-29 for the Matamata district. The owners had withdrawn their objection to the revaluation under section 50 of the Valuation of Land Act, 1925. Particulars of this valuation were forwarded. The chairman moved that the member for the electorate be written to, protesting against what he characterised as the injustice of the contents of the letter. —Carried. Foreman’s Report. The foreman, Mr. A. Ogilvie, reported that the cemetery had been cleared up and sand put down where required. Footpaths in the Farmers and Saleyards roads had been cleaned and sanded. Concrete buttress had been put in at No. 3 pipe bridge. Arawa and Hetana street surfaces had been repaired. Several places on the bitumen surface had been satisfactorily repaired with colfix.— Adopted.

The foreman was instructed to attend to the Hinuera road again, which the chairman said was getting into bad order. Speed of Motors. The board decided, on the motion of Mr. Taylor and the chairman, to have notices erected at the town boundaries setting out the speed limits in accordance with the regulations.
