WAHAROA.

The monthly meeting of the Waharoa School Committee was held on Monday, Bth inst., when Messrs Blyth (chairman), Nickerson, Bruce and J. C. Smith (secretary) were present. The head teacher (Mr. J. S. Doull) was also in attendance. Notification wds received from the Board of Education of a grant of £lO to defray cost of topping pine trees. The Inspector’s report on the work of the school was read, and favourable comment passed on ' its satisfactory nature. It was decided to hold the annual school picnic in December on Mr. D. McMillan's property, who has kindly granted tire committee the use of a paddock on which to hold the picnic. Accounts totalling £ls were passed for payment. Mr. M. Priestley, Inspector of Schools, visited the local school recently for the purpose of conducting the annual examination. , Miss Sleep, who has been appointed assistant teacher .at the Wardville school, assumed her duties at the beginning of the month. Among the recipients of decorations at the investiture held by the Gover-nor-General, Viscount Jellicoe, at Government House, Auckland, was Captain Bruce, who was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in action. Captain Bruce enlisted with the Mounted Brigade early in the war, and saw sendee in the East, but afterwards transferred to the Pioneer Battalion of the New Zealand Division, ’with whom he remained until the close of the war. While Avith the Pioneers ho supervised the construction of light rgdhvays in the forward area on the Western front. His experience gained in that Avork has been of great assistance in those parts of the province., where light railway schemes have been formulated.
