The monthly meeting of-the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union is being held on Saturday. The award for the champion cow at the Waikato Show this week went to Mr. J. H. Wilson’s (Matamata) good Friesian cow, “ Princess Julip.” This cow competed against all breeds. • Messrs. Finnerty. and Darby have decided to build a block of shops and offices on the section next to Mr. J. Corbett’s pharmacy, directly material can be secured. The recent rains have meant a great growth of grass throughout the district, and it is anticipated that hay crops will.be easily a record. There is also promise of good oaten crops. We understand that proceedings are being taken to upset the recent council election for the Matamata riding, it being alleged that certain ratepayers were not .allowed their full number of votes. The following will represent the Matamata Cricket Club against Gordon Cricket Club at Matamata on Saturday next: H. J. Moore-Jones, B. W. M. Bailey, G. L. Mahon, G. E. Dryland, J. Cranswick, A. G. Yardley, C. Green, T. A. Kemp, Thomas, K. Buchanan, ,W. Quiggc. Emergencies: P. Going, H. J. Buckley, N. Blackburn. / The Matamata Bowling Club suffered greatly through the gale on Saturday night last. The fence on the south-west side was blown down, allowing horses grazing near to tramp ahd roll on the. new lawns. The damage will necessitate a short postponement of the opening day. “May I ask you a question?” was -the rather unexpected and unusual request made by a witness at the Taupo ■ sitting of the T.T.T. Railway Commission to the chairman. “ Yes,” assented the. chairman.: Well,” asked the witness, “ has the T.T.T. Company offered its railway to the Government 'at any particular price?” “No,” replied the chairman, “ there is no offer by the company to the Cuown. It is part of the work of the Commission to report as to whether the Crown should acquire the railway, and to assess, the price at which it should be purchased if it does recommend that the Crown to'acquire it.” .
