RED CROSS SOCIETY

LOCAL ACTIVITIES The annual meeting of the local branch of the Red Cross Society was held in Edward’s sample rooms on the I7th inst. There was a good attendance. Mrs W. A. Anderson, president, was in the chair. The president thanked officebearers and the committee for their good work during the past year.

The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed. Mr J. P. Fix, secretary, made the following report on the activities of the society for the year;— Comforts for men overseas; about 12 lbs of wool per month was received from the Patriotic Council. This has been distributed and made up into comforts. Lady Galway Guild—The work in this section has been steadily progressing with the result that 5 cases of goods were forwarded overseas contain- y--1072 articles of clothing. A clothes drive was made in October,which, despite the fact that a drive had been carried out a few months earlier, was quite a success.

In the month of March a public display of all sections of the society’s work was held in the Parish halh Great interest and surprise was expressed by all who viewed the exhibition of so great a variety of goods. All who visited the display gave a. donation of either money or goods. There was also an excellent table of gifts donated by the W.D.F.U. Comforts for prisoners of war— Donations have come forward for this work” which has enabled some progress to be made. ' 33 Hussifs were forwarded to Dunedin centre ao Queenstown’s gift for this purpose. Hospital box—Articles of clothing, etc. are still.being added with a view to its completion. An effort is now being made to equip six hospital beds. The society’s thanks are tendered to all those who so readily assisted in all branches of the Red Cross work during the past year, and for the many donations received; also to St, Peter’s vestry for the use of the Parish hall, and to Mrs Edwards for the use of her

shop. The membership for this year has decreased compared with last year. The report and balance sheet were adopted.

Election of Office-bearers. The following office-bearers were reelected: President, Airs W. A. Anderson; patron, Mr J. Mackenzie; Secretary and treasurer, Mr J. P. Fix; vicepresidents, Mesdames Menlove, Fix, Mclnnes and Tomkies; committee, Mesdames J. B. Hamilton, Inder, J. W. Miller, Scott, Curie, Jago, Thompson, Murchison, Clayton, Edwards and; Mr T. Wilson, musses Warren, Thompson, Eariand, Dawson and Sutherland. It was reported that 15 lbs of wool was received from the Patriotic Council last month, and 68 balaclavas and 82 scarves had been completed and returned.

The committee tenders its thanks to Mr Geo. Cockburn and Mrs K. Scott (Glenorchy) for fleece wool.
