SERIOUS PROBLEM

INCREASE IN RABBITS The detrimental effect of the increase in rabbits in recent nionths is a problem which has been engaging the attention of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, It was reported to a meeting of the council this week that the position was being closely watched and that as soon as circumstances warranted it, a meeting of the interests concerned would be convened. The report of the Executive Com-

mittee attributed the seriousness of the

position to the following main cause,: (1) The shortage of rabbiters or farm labour; (2) the shortage of ammunition; (3) the difficulty of procuring supplies of carrots and strychnine; (4) the probable difficulty iu securing shipping, If shipping is not available for the exporting of skins, presumably sales would not take place, and no rabbits would be destroyed. In view of the lack of information concerning the shipping position, it had been decided to allow the matter to stand over for a week or two.

Mr A. C. Leary said that the short age of man-power would create diffi cultios even if shipping should be avail able.
