Table Tennis

(by “Critic’”)

The club’s, decision to move to nowquarters took effect on Wednesday night when there "was la good) attendance of players in the Garrison Hall. The Hall provides more si vice for play and once players become accustomed to the lighting conditions the general standard of play will improve as more facilities in that direction are now available. Several ladder matches were played during the evening and some good games brought close results. On the Women’s ladder the first three places remain the same as last week while M. McDowall and Mrs Lindsay advanced to sth and 7th places respectively. E. Fussed found the new surroundings. to her liking and easily won a challenge from the second player Mrs Yeint 51-10. In this game both players, especially the latter, were inclined to overdrive their returns from the forehand and they should endeavour to steady up on this aspect of their game. B. Dagg’s challenge for second place was unsuccessful"against Mrs Yeint who won 21-15. The forehand plav of the former shows improvement. M. McDowall played a steady game in her challenge for third place but there was ,* just that lack of finish which saw the result go in favor of B. Dagg 2321. The former has a good service which fcould be made still more effective by an occasional change in its direction Mrs Lindsay who is placing consistently advanced to 7th place hv defeating E. Dagg 21-9. The former placed her shots to advantage hut the latter lost touch by inconsistent forehand play. She, too, should endeavour to steady up on this aspect of her game. Mrs Landrehe was too steady for P. Wheatley whom she defeated 21-I*2 but was unsuccessful aga.inst M. Mayhew who won 21-11. These three players are showing improvement and. as in the case of others, could make their service mere effective by better placing. A highlight of the evening was the defeat of D. Williams by F. Bailey for third place on_ the men’s ladder and the accurate driving and smashing of J. Keen in a successful challenge to E. McSoriley for first place, the result being 21 -10 in favor of Keen. Keen’s elevation was shortlived however, as he lost in the replay 21-19. Bailey played consistently in his game with Williams and more confidence in his back-hand play would make him a serious contender for the two top places on the ladder. Williams did not adapt himself well to the conditions and besides a decision to Bailey he lost to Keen 21-14. His'forehand returns still lack confidence. J. McSoriley went from 7th to sth place by defeating C- Nelson 21-14 and Hail 219 and in a close challenge for 4th place he lost to Williams 23-20. The first-named possesses one of the most effective services in the club but overdriving of forehand .returns 1 is a weakness that loses him valuable points. Young players of promise are G. Nelson and E. Flttaway. The former* sends over a good service and varies his play to advantage. The latter also has a good service but he should endeavour to vary his forehand play more. P. McSoriley, too. would improve If he brought more variation into his game. He still loses points by rash forehand play. A. Griffin, too. should endeavour to steadv up in his forehand play as he employs quite a good service.
