QUEENSTOWN PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Queenstown Patriotic Committee was held in the Library on Tuesday last. Dr Anderson presided over a good attendance of members . Mr J. S'. Boyds was welcomed to the meeting as a new member of the committee, A letter received from the Lake Zone controlling committee advised that the local Bed Cross Committee would be recognised by Zone committee in-so-far as distribution of wool and making comforts, for the soldiers etc. was concerned. The Zone committee also requested that a suitable candidate be nominated to act as Maid of Honour to the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) in connection with the Queen Carnival functions. After some discussion it was unanimousily decided that Miss Joan Scaifc. Glendhn. War aka, he nominated. A recommendation was received from the Wanaka Committee that one penny in the £ be levied asi a compulsory tax on all persons for Patriotic purposes. It was decided to reject the proposition as taxation was already a problem and would become more complicated as the war proceeded.
Several suggestions were made regarding the raising of funds for Xmas parcels for soldiers overseas. It was finally resolved that a Paddy’s Market be held in the Garrison Hall on Saturday 21st. inst. Mr E. Sharpe was appointed convenor, with power to add to his committee as occasion arose. The chairman emphasised the nee easily for the fullest co-operation of all toward® the success of the Paddy’s Market.
