MAULED BY LIONESS

SHOT ELEPHANT LEFT-HANDED THOUGH WOUNDED Mr George Adamson, 33, an assistant game warden, is in hospital _ at Nairobi with serious injuries received in an extraordinary adventure in the bush when he was severely rnauled by a lioness, says the East African correspondent of the London ‘ Daily Telegraph . ’ A few hours after being mauled, when nearly delirious with pain, he shot dead an elephant which he heard moving outside his tent. He did so left-handed, dinging to his tent-pole for support. . Mr Adamson was on an expedition in the Samburu Reserve, endeavouring to track down man-eating lions which had been giving the natives trouble. When he encountered the lioness his rifle jammed as the animal charged him, and the weapon was knocked out of his grasp. The lioness then seized and mauled him, but left him before inflicting fatal injuries. He managed to return to his camp for the night, and as he was lying alone in his tent he heard the elephant moving outside, and, staggering to his feet, he shot it.
