MEETING OF AVAKATIPU BRANCH A meeting of members of .the. Wakatipu branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the Council Chambers, Arrowtown, on Monday evening 21st 'inst. Present —Messrs AV. P. Saunders (president), D. H. Cockburn, E. Shaw, AV. S. Beid,_ M. Elliott. AV. H. Thompson, S. Jenkins, T. M. Houston, J. Turner, T. D. Scott, E. (A Paterson and lan Brown (secretary). Mr Cockburn. district repiesentative on the Otago Provincial Council, who was one of the Otago delegatesi at the Dominion conference, held in AVellinigton in July, gave a resume of the principal business transacted at the conference, also of the Last meeting of the Otago Provincial Council.— Mr Cockburn was thanked for his report. A letter was received from the Live Stock Division Dept, of Agriculture stating that it was considered that ergot in ryegrass did not cause abortion or staggers in sheep—lt was decided to make further enquiries into the matter.

The increase in petrol was discussed. and a resolution was unanimously carried to the effect that the branch emphatically protested against primary producers, being asked to carry further costs.

Complaints were made regarding the delay in forwarding barley from the Prankton wharf, and it was decided to write the Minister of Railways, and the member for the district on the matter.

The .president referred to the .good work done the Farm, Accountancy Association, which bad been inaugurated by the Farmers’ Union. Some who were not members of the Farmers’ Union were now taking advantage of the benefits of the Association, and he thought that an additional charge should be made' on non-members.

Other members agreed, and the following remit was unanimously carried:—That an additional charge of not less than 30s on the present charge be made on all those who are not members of the Farmers’ Union, such additional charge to go to the Executive.

The matter of placing evidence before the Royal Commission set up to inquire into the sheep-farming industry was discussed, *ind two committees—one; for high-country and one for mixed farming— were appointed to prepare evidence to be placed befor the Commission. It was arranged that the high-country committee- meet at Queenstown on the 24th ius-t., and mixed farming at Arrowtown on the 25 th .inst.
