OBITUARY.

MR EDWARD MONISON; Aged 85. The passing of Mr Edward Monson I on Saturday last, has removed from our midst one ’more of the few remaining early settler of this district. Deceased had been in failing health for * some little time past, but being of a strong constitution, he survived one or two serious illnesses. The late Mr Monson was born in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, in 1852. He sailed from Home in the City of Dunedin when hut a lad of 18 years, arriving at Port Chalmers in the year 1870. The voyage out took 98 days. Having acquired some knowledge of farming, deceased soon secured employment on a station at Baldhill Flat, where he remained some three years. Deceased then sought pastures new and spent a short time in Southland before he took up a responsible position at Kawarau Fall® Station under the late C. C. Boyce. He was in charge of the stock and stores for the three years he was on the station and then in the late seventies' he acquired the butchering business in Rees street from one, Pat. Olosey, trading under the name of “Free Trade Butchery.” He was in business in Queenstown for close on 33 years and during part of this period he held the lease of Branches run. Having leased the butchering business in about 1910 after the decease of his first wife, Mr Monson took up the management of his farming property at Spear,grass Flat which he carried on till about three years ago when he went into retirement. In the year 1935 Mr and Mrs Monson visited the Homeland and Europe and wore absent for 12 months. When in Ireland Mr Monson spent some time in his birthplace, Boyle, and other localities of his childhood days. During his residence in the town deceased was a me’mber of the old M. Battery in the early eighties, and in later years of the Wakatipu Mounted Rifles. He served several terms on the borough council. Deceased was a notable and picturesque figure as an equestrian and knew horse-flesh, as very few did. He was a prominent horse-breeder, and at one time owned the well-known sires, Silvermark and Glencairn. An ardent supporter of the Lake County Jockey Club deceased raced with , success su.ch well-known mares or horses as Robina and Lady Constance, Plucky Willie and Speculator. For many years he filled the important post of clerk of the scales at the Fraukton races. Deceased was also one of the original members of the Lake County A. and P. Society and he was a frequent prize taker in the horse rings. The late Mr Monson had a remarkable memory and could recount many interesting stories of bis and other people's experiences on the Goldfields. During his butchering days ho had many perilous experiences in droving cattle from Kingston via the Remarkables route and other places. A man of utmost integrity he won the respect of his follow (.men. Deceased is survived by his second wife. He had one daughter by the first marriage, who died in 1909. He has one sister, Miss Ellen Monson, in Boyle, Ireland. Two nephews reside in New Zealand—Mr W. Monson, To Aroha and Mr F. Monson, Dunedin. The chief mourners on Mrs Monson’s side were her nephew®, Messrs A. and F. Samuel, of Dunedin. The funeral took place on Sunday. The remains were placed in St. Joseph’s Church, where a Requiem Mass was held prior to their removal to the local cemetery. The cortege composed a large number of old friends. The obsequies were conducted by the Rev. Father Ardagh. The pallbearers were Messrs J. McCarthy, A. Munro, F. Fitzpatrick, R. Fletcher, W. Holland and F. J. Gavin. MR ALEX. McDOUGALL. The death took place at the Lake County hospital, yesterday, after a long illness, of Mr Alex. McDougall, son of the late Robt. McDougall, Pembroke. Deceased was in his 64th year. He pursued the occupation of farming at Nit. Barker prior to becoming an inmate of the hospital. Deceased is a brother of Mr R. McDougall of Cardrona. MRS T. RUTHERFORD. Her many friends in Queenstown will regret to hear of the death tit Invercargill on Saturday last, of Mrs Rutherford, wife of Mr Thos. Rutherford, a former lessee of Hotel Eichardt. Deceased had been in failing health for some time. Deceased was of a kindly disposition and was universally respected. MR WILLIAM BOYNE. The death is reported in Gore on Saturday last, of Mr Wm. Boyne, elder son of the late Mr Robt. Boyne, who carried on storekeeping in this town many years ago.
