NOTES'AND COMMENTS ON I THINGS THAT MATTER. HITLER AND VATICAN. - For some time past, Hitler has been conducting a rigorous antij Catholic campaign in Germany. One , of his first steps was to suppress) i Catholic confessional school© at j Wurttemberg, in the Saar, and in j the Palatinate, and a State Youth 1 Law suppressed surviving Catholic j Youth organisations by ordering all ; children to join up Avith the “BroAvn i Shirt Hitler Youth” movement. * PROTEST FROM AMERICA. The resentment of Catholic Germans has been shown as far ias members of the faith living under ( the beneficient Nazi rule have dared to protest. A much stronger protest comes from America, Avhere, according to New York “Time,” the Roman Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal Mundelein, has launched a counter-attack on the Nazi Government. Speaking to 500 Catholic prelates , and prie-tsi assembled for a diocesan conference recently, he said: “The fight is to take 2,000,000 German children aAvay from us .Perhaps you will ask how it i© that a nation, of 60,000,000 people, intelligent people, will submit in fear and servitude to an alien, and Austrian paperhanger, and a poor one at that, I am told.” CATHOLIC PRESS SUPPRESSED. The semi-official Vatican news- ’ paper, “Osservatore Romano,” publishes reports from German Catholic sources charging Hitler’s' police Avith closing doAvn and confiscating 18 Catholic printing plants.. DANGER TO GERMANY. A former instructor at Havard University, Professor Friederich Schonemann, sees danger from America if Hitler does not modify his present anti-Catholic policy. The professor said recently: “I think it is rather foolish and at the same time dangerous on the part of a certain section of the German press, to indulge in criticism of the United States.” (He referred of course to the storm which followed Cardinal Mundelein’s remarks). “Public opinion in America could be mobilised for Avar against Germany Avithin a feAv hours.” A DIPLOMATIC MOVE.
