A POPULAR POST OFFICE OFFICIAL.

MR D. R. FOWLER PARE WELLED. In the Atheneum Hall, Arrowtown, on Wednesday evening last, Mr D. (Bob) Fowler, who has received notice of his transfer from the local post-office to the Ranfurly office, was entertained at a farewell social by the residents of the town and district. In addition to being a popular postal official, Bob is a member of the Wakatipu 1.0.0. F. Lodge, the local territorials, and Tennis and Golf Clubs. So when it became known that he was leaving, the members of these organisations decided to join with the general public in making one presentation. His popularity was clearly shown by the large and representative gathering, all parts of the district being represented. The evening was devoted to dancing and euchre, and prior to supper being handed round, a presentation was "made to the guest of honour. His Worship the Mayor, (Mr W. H. James), who presided, read [a number of apologies from friends who were unable to be present, and who sent their best wishes. Mr James said he was pleased to see such a large attendance to do honour to Bob Fowler, who had been a most efficient and obliging official, and whose cheery smile would be greatly missed at the local post office. Mr James said that Bob had also taken a keen interest in the various organisations of which he was a member. While they all regretted Bob’s departure, they were pleased that the change meant promotion, and what was Arrowtown’s loss would be Ranfurly’a gain. In handing Mr Fowler a substantial roll of notes, subscribed by his friends, Mr James said that the gift carried with it the best wishes for Bob’s future success. After “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow’’ had been heartily sung, Mr Fowler thanked Mr James for his kind remarks and those present for the pleasant evening and the presentation received. He considered that he had only done his duty in the post office, while his association with the Lodge, territorials, tennis and golf clubs had been a great pleasure to him. After supper, provided by the ladies, dancing was resumed and spiritedly kept up until an early hour. The music was supplied by the Misses Jackways and Messrs Reg. Romans and Goomes, while the duties of M.C’s. were carried out by Messrs P. Mcßride and M. Jenkins. The prizes for .progressive euchre were won by Mrs Dakers and Mr W. H. Thompson, and the consolations by Mrs G. H. Hansen and Master S. Dakers.
