Light frost in the evenings and mornings is retarding growth somewhat. The Hon. Walter Nash returned to New Zealand from Britain on Satday last and was, with the Prime. Minister (the Et. Hon. M. J. Savage) officially welcomed at Auckland. St. Joseph’s fortnightly euchre and dance was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening when, there was a good attendance. • Mrs Roycroft won the first prize for the ladies, and Mrs J. Cookburn and Mrs F. Gavin tied for second place, the former winning the cut. The gent's lirst prize was won by Mr M. Bell, and Mr J. Dagg was the winner of tine second prize. The supper was provided by the following ladies: Mesdames D. E. Hamilton, b. Cosgrove and AV. Edwards. An enjoyable dance was held after supper. Messrs A. E. Short and party who are elevating in the Shotover river below the Sandhills, washed up a nice return last week, exceeding, it is said, lODozs. The Central Shot-over have also had a most satisfactory wash-up—over lOOozs is reported. For the benefit of Head of Lake readers we have been asked to announce that the Plunket nurse will visit Glcnorchy on Monday next, 23rd •'August. Thereafter visits will be made to the Head of Lake every second month. Arrangements have also been made for the- nurse to visit Arrow town once in every four weeks, commencing from A ednesday, Ist September next. On their return to Clyde last evening, one of the cars conveying the Badminton players, skidded at the lirst turning in the Prank to a road and went over the bank. The car was practically uninjured as it came in contact with some gorsc. One of the lady occupants, however, suffered a broken collar bone which was attended to by Dr. Anderson. Beyond a good shaking, none of the others were injured. After the lady received medical attention, the party proceeded on their way home.

The euchre tournament and dance, 1 ■which is being held fortnightly under the auspices of the local branch of the Labour Party, took place in the Town Hall on Friday, evening, there being a good attendance of card enthusiasts. The prizes were won by Mrs Fodie (lady’s first) and Mr J. Chalmers (gent's first). The second prizes were won by Mrs Eastlake and Mr Eason. An enjoyable dance was held after supper, the music for which was supplied by Mr G. Mitchell. Miss Linda Edwards played an extra. The winners of the Monte Carlo dance were Miss L. Scott and Mr E. Dudley, and the lucky spot, Mrs G. Jones and Mr Jasi Powell. The ladies’ prize was kindly donated by Mr J. S. Eoyds. During last week the contractor for the new post-office, Mr L. Breen and his staff of workmen removed the old postmaster’s residence and other buildings which were situated at at the rear of the post-office. The work of removal was facilitated by the ready purchase by local householders of the greater portion of the timber for kindling. One small building was purchased by Mr W. P. McDonald and removed to Iris run at Arthurs Point. The foundations of the new Post-office (to be placed in the rear of the present office) will be put down this week. We understand that a local resident has taken an option over the present post-office with a view to re-erecting it as a residence.
