OBITUARY.

Mrs J. P. WALSH; aged 48. The news of the sudden passing in Invercargill public hospital on Wednesday morning last of Mrs Walsh, wife of our townsman, Mr J. P. Walsh, was received in Queenstown with expressions of surprise and sorrow. Deceased had not been in robust health for some time past and she went to Invercargill for treatment in the hospital. She appeared to make good progress after an operation and no fears were entertained that her end was so near. However, her death came with little warning and caused a shock to her near relatives and friends. 'The late Mrs Walsh was the sixth member of a family of thirteen, eight of whom are now alive. Her parents are Mrs and the late Mr Thos. Hannan, Seaward Bush, Southland. Deceased, who was 48 years of age, received her education In the Tisbury school. After her marriage in Invercargill 25 years ago, she j came to this district with her ijiusband and had lived continuously in Queenstown. Deceased was of a retiring disposition, but she won the love and respect of a large circle of friends. A most devout adherent of __ St. Joseph’s Church, the late Mrs Walsh will be much missed by the congregation and also in its social activities. Mr and the late Mrs Walsh celebrated the. silver jubilee of their wedding in the month of June by a nuptial mass in St. Joseph’s Church, when they received the congratulations of their friends. Deceased’s surviving relatives besides her husband are her mother, Mrs F. Hannan, one brother and seven sisters. Her brother, Mr Jas. Hannan, lives in Auckland, and her sisters are Mrs T. McNeil (Queenstown), Mrs C. Lyons, Mrs W. Stott, Mrs M. Swain, Mrs W. O’Connor and Miss F. Hannan (Invercargill) and Miss I. Hannan (Dunedin). Deceased had no family.

The funeral took place from Invercargill on Friday. Requiem Mass Avas celebrated in the Basilica at 8 a.m., Rev. Father T. Gavin being the celebrant, and the body Avas brought to Queenstown and placed in St. Jaseph's Church. The cortege, Avhich Avas a large one, left the church for the Queenstown cemetery, Avhere the obsequies were carried out by Rev. Father Ardagli. A large number of Avreaths testified to the esteem in Avhich deceased Avas hold. The pallbearers Avere Messrs Stott, O’Coimar, Swain and McNeil, brother-in-laws of deceased, and Messrs W. Holland and A. Munro.

MR JAMES MILNE; Aged 71 Years. The death of Mr James Milne occurred in a private hospital at Invercargill on Monday, 2nd inst, and Avas not unexpected, as he had been ill some time Avith heart trouble. He was born at Milton, the son of early Otago settlers, the late Mr and Mrs James Milne, Avho came to this district with the first farm isettjers', when he Avas a child, and received his education locally. Ho early shoAved an enterprising spirit, and met Avith ,a good measure of success on the land, being equipped Avith practical knowledge and sound judgment. In the carlv 90s he owned Fernhill and Mt. Nicholas stations, Lake Wakatipu. Thereafter he returned to Southland, having (at first in partnership) acquired Raukauhouka Estate. Selling this property, he purchased Grange Farm, Kapuka, Avhere he continued to live to the last.

Mr Milne took an active interest in agricultural matters, and filled the office of President of the Southland A. and P. Association. He was a member of the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ Association, in which he took a keen interest. He had a good share of sound common sensei, and his opinion on public questions was accepted as valuable. He was of a .genial and kindly disposition, had many friends, and was held in universal' respect. He is survived by a family of four—-Mrs K. G. McKenzie (Kapuka), Mrs James Ward (Kapuka), Mr James F. Milne (Manapouri) and Mr Cecil Milne' '(lnvercargill). His wife predeceased him 20 years. The funeral to the Eastern Cemetery, was very largely attended —a deserved tribute to a sterling man—Wyndham Herald.
