Lake Wakatip Mail QUEENTOWN. TUESDAY, JULY 27 1937

Wednesday last, 21st July, was the 66th anniversary of the election of the first mayor of Queenstown. His Worship was .the late Mr J. W. Roberts on.

The contractor for Queenstown’s new post-office is Mr L. Breen, builder, of Invercargill. The new office 'will be built of stone and concrete and should present a fine appearance when completed. The postmas tens residence will be in wood and will be detached. The foundations will be put down shortly. The architect is Mr E. It. Wilson, Invercargill.

Reach House boarding establishment has changed hands, the new proprietor being Mr J. O’Connell, of Invercargill. The late owner, Mr T. McSoriley, has been in possession ol the bouse for nine years.

The annual meeting of the Wakatipu Gun Club will be held in the Lake County Chambers on Monday evening next, 2nd August.

The weekly progressive euchre evening was held at Arthurs Point on Friday last and was well patronised. The prizes were won by Mrs Robinson (Arrowtown) and Mrs Jno. Thompson (Queenstown) and the consolations were awarded to .Miss M. Thompson and Mr Peter Ritchie. The music for the dance was provided by Mrs R. Lloyd, and Messrs ,T. Thompson and S. Spooner. The prizes for the progressive euchre were the gift of Mr G. V. Wilkinson.

Much interest was evinced by townsfolk on Friday morning last in the felling of a giant tree on Mr J. J. Mcßride’s property in Camp St. Long before the time ap.pointed for the “fall” numbers of people had congregated on the scene, and much speculation was rife as to the probable height of the tree, its a.ge, and whether or not the wood was sound. The tree, a Welliugtonia Gigantea was planted about (53 years ago by the late Mr L. Ho top, The height was 123 ft, the diameter at base sft 9in, and the wood was quite sound throughout. The tree had been dead for some years and would prove dangerous to property in time to come. No reason has been attributed for the death of the tree except that its proximity to the creek might have been the cause. Tit is said that the two trees alongside the Library arc just as old and they are in a healthy state.

'The Queenstown Municipal Brass Band’s fourth social on Tuesday evening last was again well patronised by card enthusiasts. The prizewinners in the euchre tourney were. Mr W. Henderson (.men) and Mrs Seekup (lady) The consolation prizes went to Mr M. Seekup and Miss M. Wallace. The prizes were kindly donated by Messrs J. W. Gardiner, F. J. Gavin, and E. J. Lowen. The caterers were Mesdamcs M. H Gavin, W. Farrant, D. Jones, G. Jones, A. Hood, W. Davies, _ M. McCarthy, A. Ives and Miss Geislow. The music for the dance "was supplied by Mrs Lloyd (piano), Miss H. Wallace (piano), Messrs G. Mitchell (banjo), Fat. MOSloriley (violin) and A. Deer (cornet).

Traffic inspectors controlled by the Transport Department have been instructed to prosecute immediately motorists seen chiving on the wiong side of the road, cutting corners, or failing to give way to traffic from the right. The department has also instructed its inspectors' to exercise more rigid control to obtain a stricter observance ol the 30 mres an^ hour speed limit, to prescribed areas. “Any driving that tends to cause accidents is going to be dealt with severely,, said an official of the Transport Department in Wellington.
