An ordinary meeting of the Lake County Council will be lucid on Thursday.

Brighter weather has been the order during the past week, although it is still unsettled. There is now a very visible growth in field and gaiden.

Major P. Mackenzie, Messrs A. Simson, W. H. James and J. J. Mcßride, motored to Dunedin on Thursday last to represent the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society at a conference of neighbouring societies in connection with legislation foreshadowing the linking up of such bodies. They will make a report to the meeting ol members on Thursday evening next. The Lower Shotover bachelors purpose holding a Bachelors Ball on the 16th October. Further particulars will be advertised later.

Mcßride, secretary of the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society, has received the following telegram from the Minister of Internal Affairs;— Under the new legislation regulations are being issued in the next few days increasing license fees for fishing in the coming season. Males over sixteen, 255; women 7s 6d, and persons under 16, ss, with other readjustments in respect to shorter period licenses. Full schedule is being prepared and posited you. Proportion of fees to be taken for research work will be prescribed by regulation not finally fixed, but probably 10 per cent, leaving the ba’ance of increase for societies.” The number of game_ licenses issued by postmasters in the Lakes District Acclimatisation district last season was 49 —21 for native and imported game and 28 for native game only. The revenue derived thereby was £35, less commissions, to the Postal Department and Internal Affairs Department, amounting to £4 5s 9d.

The Queenstown Municipal Brass Band’s fortnightly social on Thursday was again well patronised by townspeople. The prize-winners in the euchre tourney - were Mr Pat. McSoriley (men), and Miss E. Byron (ladies). The consolation went to Mrs Tomkics and Mr W, H. Overton. The prizes were donated by Mr Hearn and Mr J. Dagg. The caterers were Mesdamcs P. Bennett’s J. Flahive, R. East-lake, M. E. Gavin, J. Dagg, T. Fearn. W. Farrant, Jas. Farrant, D. Gunn, A. Hood, W. Davies and Miss Geisow. A very enjoyable dance was held after supper the music for which was supplied by Mr G. A man named Frank Benjamin Collier, 63 years of age, formerly a commercial traveller living in Invercargill, died somewhat suddenly at Maori Point at 8.30 on Friday morning. Death was. due to natural causes. Deceased’s wife was employed as cook for Skippers Ltd. mining camp, and deceased, who was in ill-health, assisted her. Dr. Anderson was called to the camp, but deceased had passed away. It was not considered necessary to hold an inquest. The body was removed to Invercargill for burial.
