POSTAGE ON NEWSPAPERS

KATE REDUCED. We were advised, by wire from ilr W. A. Bodkin, M,P. at Wellington on Friday afternoon that Cabinet bad decided that all newspapers that weigh three ounces and under are to be allowed through the post at the old rate of one half penny per copy as from yesterday. In making the announcement, the Post-master-General, the Hon. J. B. Donald, said it was considered the existing rate of one .penny per copy was hardship on light weight news- . papers. It was anticipated that the concession made would assist the revenue of the Department. Mr Bodkin interested himself considerably in this matter and was responsible for deputations from a number of country members that waited upon the Post-master General pressing the claims of country newspapers for better consideration with regard to the rates. ' The Lake Wakatip Mail was one of the newspaper proprietaries that did not pass the extra postage (imposed on Ist March fast) on to its subscribers.
