MISCELLANEOUS SPORTING.

[By G leaner. [ RACING. Mister Gamp was a good mount for Bert Ellis. Money Mine is proving aptly named to his new owner. Uralia's win in G.N. Steeple -was a boil over. No work out or recent form. Said this horse could beat Wiltshire and Co. in good time. 10th in a weak field was the form shown on first day and yet the G.N. win couldn't have been a fluke.

Glendowie isn't right. Wiltshire seemed overweighed. Bed Fuchsia was a costly failure. Mrs McDonald will persevere with the good son (of All Bed. Some of the old heads will remember the late Alf. Drake, who left quite a fortune when he died in Australia. They will probably remember Drake's race with Denny Powell. The sprint was from Post Office to Eichardt's and Drake lost a. lot of money when Powell won narrowly. Drake was for a time connected with Dick Mason and then left for Sydney, afterwards going to Adelaide, Avhere he died. Perhaps some follower of racing can tell me if it was in '73 or '74 when Dan O'Brien brought Tambourine and Malabar to the local circuit. It was about this time that Howarth of Half-way Bay had a neddy called Tambourine Lass racing. Jack Powell had the mount in a local event and notwithstanding Howarth's conviction as to her galloping ability she finished last. It was a disgusted sheep owner who watched Powell unsaddle. Fabriano has been a great spec for "Put" Hogan. Latin Quartier galloped well at Wingatui. / This tfellow likes winter conditions. FOOTBALL. Local football in a state of chaos. The local club will probably drop out of the competition. Arrow Juniors had no right to officially default and then travel to Queenstown. The local club suffered a set-back when the Sub-union toolc the '"proceeds of the friendly game with Cromwell. The local club made all arrangements, obtained permission to play and the Sub-union steps in and collects the gate money. The All Black team is only a 2nd best team with some of the indispensibles thrown in. to give it a standGeddes was lucky to have good inside backs to make play for him. Neither he or Carlson of Wanganui impressed the critics. Nepia was lucky to beat Heazelwood for the full-back job. Leo Heazelwood played a superb game. Cool and using great judgment, he outshone Nepia from first to last. Bill Dalley was the only half-back possible withHolden, Kilby and Mills not open for selection. The forwards look a poor lot—a deal of efficient coaching would make them pack an even scrum that should get ball but who will coach them in scrummaging. Probably S. S. Deans, the "play international matches" fanatic might give it a pop. Another ex JST.Z.B.F.U. head gets a trip. Mr Jas. McLeod takes a meander this time. Arthur Geddes should be due boon, too. Perhaps he'll take a team to Hong Kong. Local Sub-union runs first rounds of seven a-side schools' competition for Miller school cup. If the boys play up to usual standard good games should result. Messrs Hay and Moore of Arthurs Point and Lower Shotover, respectively, have good, well-coached teams. Local teams are uneven and play individual football. Team work will always win out in 7 a-side. Passing, not kicking, win games.
