WOULD RATHER REMAIN WHERE HE WAS. The harvest—a good one—was over and the farmer had decided to give a feast to all his hands. The farmer's wife flitted about everywhere, j in the endeavour to make everybody I feel perfectly at home. In order to bestow special honour on the head man she graciously invited him to sit down on her right hand. The man, however, remained silent and immovable, to all appearances quite overwhelmed with this token of esteem. "Come," said the hostess, encouragingly, "don't be bashful. You've a right to the place of honour, you know." "Thanks to you, missis," said the man ; "but if it's all the same I'd rayther sit opposite this pudden !" Daughter : "What is penury, ma ?" Ma : "Penury, my dear, is what your father earns by his pen !"
