The police of Queenstown and Cromwell objected to the applications on the ground that there was no necessity for same. It was stated as a principal reason that all coaches and steamers arrived early enough to allow travellers to get into the hotels by 10 o'clock, Messrs Brodrick and Turton, solicitors, appeared for their clients in the towns mentioned and advanced reasons why the extensions should be granted. The Chairman, on behalf of the committee, stated that this being their last year of office they were not disposed to make any alteration this time. But should they be elected again their decision now would not be binding on them next year. In fact the Chairman said that there was a consensus of opinion that the ten o'clock closing time was late enough and unless sufficient reasons were advanced next year for extending the time to 11 o'clock the applications would not be granted. The police reports concerning the licensed houses were satisfactory. Messrs W. Turton and A. M. Brodrick appeared for the applicants.
