HEAD OF THE LAKE.

fROM 008 OW> CORRESPONDENT. September k The Weather.—lt would bo difficult, I believe, to pick out a finer peiiod of good weather for the past few years than we have had for the last six weeks, especially at this time of the year. There has been very little frost and no rain until last week when we had a good shower, which softened things a bit and caused a small flood. It is spring in reality. Everything is showing forth signs of the latent life hidden in Mother earth—stem and root. I also notice that fruit trees, small and large, and willows are turning green much earlier than usual. Should anything like the same weather continue from now on, farmers will have no reason to complain of a late spring when the harvest comea, as they usually do. Those who have gardens, too, should take time by the forelock and go ahead, for the expected rush of exhibition visitors means a larger demand for their produce. Local Enterprise.—MrFenn's Hotel Arcadia is now on the way towards completion. The timber is all sawn and has been put through a seasoning process. Several carpenters have been at the work for some time, and more are coming as they are required, so, if they are in any way smart workmen they should have an hotel of twenty rooms ready for next tourist season, during which time, I hear, that Mr H. Birley is taking it. We wish him every success in his enterprise. Roads and grounds for gardens and recreation purposes are also being made. Mining.—The two scheelite mines are still being worked ; that at the Precipice Creek is in process of being opened up. —Messrs Valpy Bros, have opened up the outlet of their terrace claim, Bucklerburn, as it is more convenient for working purposes, and are getting a fair return.—Messrs Wells and Campbell have finished their terrace claim in the same creek.—Campbell Bros, are now fixing up a hydraulic plant to work the deep ground in the bed of the Bucklerburn near the foot of the creek.

County Work.—Roads and tracks are pretty well finished for this year, i.e., road, Routeburn Valley, and tracks, Lake Harris and Snowfields, Feruhill, and Greenstone-Kinloch improvements. Some deviations and improvements are still being made between hero and the 25-mile, Lake Wakatipu. (From an Occasional Correspondent.) A ball was held here under the auspices of the school on the 24th ult. Ihe weather was fair and a good number attended. The scarcity of young dancing men was very noticeable. Ihe ball ga\e much enjoyment to those wlki were present and financially, it was a great success, which is the main factor. Mr W . Davidson supplied first-class music as usual, whilst Mr I'. McKenzie made a very efficient M.C. The supper arrangements were very good and reflected great credit on the 1-tdies. J will try and describe tlio dresses ot some of the ladies who were present Mr-: J. t'iim.!)■;«, v.
