AN AFFLUENT BEGGAR.
An aged beggar stood for years in Moorfields. Loudon. He received a certain smill sum daily trom a merchant who passed there on bis way to the Exchange. Ous morning the merchant passed without bestowing the usunl alms, aud with a troubled look upon his face. This occurred for three days iu succession, whin tlin beggar could stand it 110 longer, and, stopping his benefactor, he ventured to iuquire the cause of bis trouble. The merchant replied that two of his ships had foundered at sea, and this reverse of fortune landed him in liabilitie« that threatened his ruin. " Will £SOO be of us» to you as a loan for awhile ? ' said the bi-ggar, " for, if so, you shall have it to-11 orrcw." " It would save me from ruin, ' responded the anxious mt rebuilt. I be beggar handed him a cheque for that amount next day, stating that, if rcqu led, another sum of similar magnitude was at his •! i * poaal. I'l,e loan was suflicieut to re-establiih Ibe merchant's it. dit, and lie afterwards amassed a considerable fortune.
