Id some experiments performed some time ago by Mr Vulpiau, it was found by him that a oirp, when deprived of its two cerebral hemispheres, not only survived the operation, but continued to manifest cerebal faculties; that after two or three days the fish began to eat; and that if small fragments of hardboiled egg were thrown to it, it went for them eßgerly and devoured them. One of these fishes having been accidentally killed at the end of six months, Mr Vulpian found as he states in a recent note to the Academy of Sciences, that no tendency toward a reproduction of the extirpated organ was exhibited Some scientific men are assertiug that it is the close hats that men wear that causes baldness to be more prevalent in men than in women, and in this they are about as near rioht as they are in every other matter they attempt to eluciate. After some investigation and profound thought we have concluded that the true reason lies in the fact the women wear their hair long and men have theirs cut off. The remedy, then, is plain. Let the hair grow as long as possible. We have yet to see the first long-haired man who is bald-headed.—American Paper. Electricity has in its time played many parts, but to apply it to a conductor's baton has, at any rate, the superior merit of novelty. After the recent manoeuvres of the German army, a serenade was given in honour of the Emperor, and 1200 executants took part. It was pitch dark, and, of course, quite impossible for the bandsmen to see the conductor's beat. But science suggested an accumulator on the music desk, connected with a properly-covered wire secured along the conductor's stick, from the tip of which there shone a tiny electric light. " Grape cure," is practised in Prance and Germany in the autumn, and is regarded as a cure for many diseases due to high feeding. The patient is given a pound of grapes to eat first day. This amount is added to until the person can eat five or six pounds a day. The other food is lessened, and the diet at last consists entirely of grapes. It cures obesity and many other complaints, and starts the person off on a new lease of life. Fruit is a necessity in a rational diet, and of immense value in dietetic medicine.

A huge iron reservior is being built at a remote spot in the outer side of Amsterdam, for the storage of petroleum. It will be nearly 33 feet in diameter and of the same depth, and is calculated to hold 7,900,000 litres of oil, or nearly 1,740,000 gallons. The petroleum will be brought direct from Russia in vessels specially constructed, and it will bo pumped out at Amsterdam into the tank, thus saving the expense of filling and emptying casks and diminishing the risk of accidents. The word" lullably" is derived from "Lilla abi!" (began Lilith). Lilith was it famous witch in the Middle Ages, and is introduced in the nizht scene in "Faust." lhe Hebrews had a popular belief that from Lilith, a female spectre, descended all thn demons which tempt mankind. They believed Lilith to have been a wife of Adam before Eve's creation. Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy gives the story of Lillis, and pictures her as a beautiful woman, who lures men to destruction. The largest vine in the word is said to be one growing at Oys, Portugal, which has been in bearing since 1802. Its miximum yield was in 1864, in which year it produced a sufficient quantity or' grapes to make 165 gallons of wine; in 1874, IHi J gallons, and in 1884 only 19\ gallons. It k covers an area of 5315 square feet, and the stem at the bate meaning 6} feet in circumference.
