Mining Intelligence.

Mr Inman, one of a party of miners from Big Bay district, who arrived in town last werk, tives a favorable account of some of the claims thrre. The prospects of his party, who are working between Martin's Bay and Big Bay, are very fair, and he brought in a good sample of gold, which evidently came from a reef not far from the claim. He returned on Wednesday, accompanied by Mr Sutherland, said to be a delegate from a Keefton syndicate. Mr Fred Evans brought down from the Pheenix mine yesterday 304 ounces of smelted gold. Owing to the mishap a few weeks ago with ajiortion of the electric works, only 15 to 20 heads of stampers have beeu at work, but to-morrow or Monday it is expected that the whole will be in full swing again. Mr Fletcher, who has been superintending the work, leaves very shortly for Adelaide, where he baa been engaged to superintend the lighting up of the International Exhibition. We understand that the reef in Photnix mine below water level is ten feet wide, but the stone is not so rich as in the narrow portion of the lode. The Phuenix Extended Co. are still driving away, and expect shortly to strike one or two new lodes. The erection of" Maori Point Co.'s battery of ten heads is nearly completed, and crushing operations will be commenced in a fortnight. The main crosscut lower tunnel is 200 feet, but another 100 fett has to be driven ; the men are said to be getting on well, and it is believed, from the nature of the county, that another reef will shortly be struck. The rails of the tramway in the upper level—lso feet above—are all laid, and contract has been let for carriage of the stone at Is 2d per ton. The race has been thoroughly repaired, so that everything is ready for starting, except the machine. The latter will be fitted with cast iron ripples and electric copper plates, but a great drawback has been the great delay in transmission of goods from Melbenrne. as it has more than once taken over a week to get from the Bluff to Queens town. We hear Mr Pearce will take charge of the works next week, as the present manager, Mr R. Nicholls, is about to proceed to Melbourne for the benefit of his health.
